RBC is Canada's largest bank by market capitalization, and millions of Canadians use it to send and receive Interac e-Transfers every day. But RBC structures its e-Transfer limits differently from most banks, which can catch you off guard if you are not aware of how it works.
Here is everything you need to know about RBC Interac e-Transfer limits, fees, and how to send more when you need to.
In this guide
RBC Interac e-Transfer Limits
RBC categorizes e-Transfers under "Third Party Payments", which is a separate daily limit category from your debit card (Point of Sale) purchases. This distinction matters because changing your debit card limit will not affect your e-Transfer limit, and vice versa.
The standard per-transaction limit is $3,000, but RBC states that all clients can send up to $10,000 per day through the RBC Mobile app after verifying their identity. RBC does not publish separate weekly or monthly caps for personal accounts.
| Limit Type | Personal | Business |
|---|---|---|
| Per Transfer | $3,000 | $25,000 |
| Daily | $10,000 | $25,000 |
| Weekly (7 days) | — | — |
| Monthly (30 days) | — | — |
| Receiving (per transfer) | $25,000 | |
Limits shown are defaults for standard accounts and may vary by account type. Dash (—) means the bank does not publish a separate limit for that period. Last verified March 2026.
RBC e-Transfer Fees
RBC offers free unlimited Interac e-Transfers on all Canadian dollar personal bank accounts — chequing and savings — up to 999 transfers per month per account. After that, RBC charges $1.00 per additional transfer. The 999-transfer cap is generous enough that most personal users never see a fee.
Receiving e-Transfers is always free at RBC, regardless of your account type.
Cancellation: free within 15 days. After 15 days, if the recipient hasn't deposited and you haven't cancelled, RBC charges a $5.00 reclaim fee when the transfer expires.
Tip for small business owners
If you get paid by e-Transfer, enable Autodeposit so payments go straight into your account. This eliminates the risk of transfers expiring and means you do not need to answer a security question for each payment.
Can You Increase Your RBC e-Transfer Limit?
No. RBC's official position is unambiguous: "The Interac e-Transfer limit cannot be increased or decreased." Unlike Wealthsimple, which lets you raise limits in-app, or TD and Scotiabank, which let you call to request a higher limit, RBC's $10,000 per day cap is fixed for personal accounts.
What you can do:
- Verify your identity in the RBC Mobile app to unlock the full $10,000 per day. All RBC clients have access to this cap once verified — no phone call needed.
- Upgrade to a business account. RBC business accounts support up to $25,000 per transaction with higher daily caps. If you regularly send over $10,000, this is the most direct fix.
- Use a wire transfer for one-off larger amounts. RBC's domestic wire fee is $45 CAD, but it accommodates much larger amounts in a single transaction. See e-Transfer vs wire transfer.
- Use bill payment if the recipient is a registered payee at RBC.
You also cannot raise the limit through RBC Online Banking. The online settings only let you adjust ATM and in-store purchase limits, not e-Transfer limits.
RBC Interac e-Transfer Not Working
If your RBC e-Transfer is not going through, here are the most common causes and fixes:
- You have hit your daily limit. RBC's "Third Party Payments" limit is separate from your debit card limit. Check your remaining limit in the RBC Mobile app or Online Banking.
- The recipient's email or phone is wrong. Double-check the recipient's contact details. Even a small typo will prevent delivery.
- Autodeposit conflict. If the recipient has Autodeposit enabled with a different bank, the transfer will go to that bank regardless of the security question.
- System maintenance. Interac occasionally performs maintenance. Check interac.ca for service status.
- Account restrictions. New accounts or recently flagged accounts may have temporary e-Transfer restrictions. Call RBC at 1-800-769-2511 to resolve.
- Suspicious or fraudulent transfer. If something looks off about an incoming e-Transfer, do not accept it. Read our guide on how to spot fake e-Transfer scams.
How Long Does an RBC e-Transfer Take?
With Autodeposit enabled on the receiving end, RBC e-Transfers typically arrive within minutes. Without Autodeposit, the recipient needs to answer a security question, and the transfer is available for 30 minutes to 30 days depending on your settings.
In rare cases, transfers may be delayed for fraud review. If your transfer has been pending for more than a few hours, contact RBC at 1-800-769-2511.

Get Started FreeHow to Cancel an RBC e-Transfer
You can cancel a pending e-Transfer as long as the recipient has not yet deposited the funds:
- Log in to RBC Online Banking or the RBC Mobile app.
- Navigate to Transfers and find the pending e-Transfer.
- Select Cancel.
If the recipient has Autodeposit enabled, the transfer is deposited automatically and cannot be cancelled. In that case, you will need to contact the recipient directly to request a return.
RBC Business e-Transfer Limits
RBC business accounts can send up to $25,000 per transaction with higher daily limits than personal accounts. If you are self-employed, a freelancer, or running a micro-business that regularly processes payments over $3,000, a business account is worth considering.
How RBC Compares to Other Banks
RBC's $10,000 daily limit (via mobile) is higher than most Big Five banks — TD caps daily sending at $3,000, Scotiabank at $3,000 as well, and BMO and CIBC also sit at $3,000 — but its per-transaction cap of $3,000 is standard. If you need even higher personal limits, Wealthsimple lets you adjust up to $25,000 per day in-app, and Desjardins, EQ Bank, and ATB all allow $5,000 per transaction.
