Updated

The short answer: a statement of work (SOW) says exactly what will be delivered on one project: the scope, what is out of scope, the deliverables and dates, how the work is accepted, and the fees.

Use it alone, or under an agreement you have already signed. The wording changes with your choice. It is a template to adapt, not legal advice.

How to fill in each section

Why acceptance matters

Without a test and a review time, a project can stay almost finished for weeks. A clear test, a named contact and a set review time give you a point where the work is done and the invoice can go out.

Statement of work or service agreement?

For repeat clients, sign one service agreement and a short statement of work for each project. For a one-off job, the stand-alone setting may be enough. To record a change later, use the change order template. If you are still selling the work, start with the proposal template.

Questions

What is a statement of work?

A document that sets out the work on one project: what is included, what is not, the deliverables, the dates, how the work is accepted, and the fees.

What is the difference between a statement of work and a contract?

A contract sets the general terms of a relationship. A statement of work sets the details of one project. Many businesses sign one master agreement, then one statement of work for each project.

Does a statement of work need a separate agreement?

Not with this template. If you choose the stand-alone setting, it adds basic terms for ownership, liability, ending the work and disagreements. If you already have an agreement, choose that setting and name it.

What makes a good out-of-scope section?

Name the things a client could reasonably assume are included. It is the fastest way to prevent a dispute about extras.

How do I handle changes after signing?

Agree them in writing before the changed work starts. A change order template works well for this.

Is this statement of work template free?

Yes. Fill it in, preview it on the page, then download the PDF or print it. You do not need an account, and your draft is saved in this browser only.
