Vancity e-Transfer Limit 2026: $6,000 per transfer, $10,000/day

Limits, fees, and how to send more when Vancity says no.

By Biller.ca Team · · 6 min read

The short answer

Per transfer
$6,000
Per day
$10,000
Per week
$10,000
Per month
$20,000

Sending is free on Vancity's standard personal chequing accounts, and receiving is free. Vancity does not raise this limit; the alternatives are below.

Vancity is a Vancouver-based credit union, and unlike most of Canada's roughly 200 credit unions it publishes its Interac e-Transfer limits in full. They also differ from the usual credit union defaults: Vancity lets you send $6,000 in a single transfer, double the $3,000 cap at most banks and at the typical credit union.

The catch is the rolling windows. The $6,000 per-transfer figure sits inside a $10,000 cap per 24 hours and per 7 days, and $20,000 per 30 days, and Vancity does not raise any of them for individual members.

Vancity Interac e-Transfer Limits

Vancity publishes these personal sending limits:

"Rolling" means each window is measured from the time of each transfer, not reset at midnight or on the first of the month. The 7-day cap is the one people hit: the daily limit and the weekly limit are the same $10,000, so sending $10,000 on a Monday uses up the whole week, not just the day.

On the receiving side, you can accept up to $25,000 per transfer, the Interac network cap. Vancity lists no daily, weekly or monthly limit on what you receive.

Limit Type Personal Business
Per Transfer $6,000 $25,000
Daily $10,000 $50,000
Weekly (7 days) $10,000 $125,000
Monthly (30 days) $20,000 $250,000
Receiving (per transfer) $25,000

Limits shown are defaults for standard accounts and may vary by account type. Dash (—) means the bank does not publish a separate limit for that period. Last verified March 2026.

A higher single transfer than the Big Five

RBC, TD, BMO, CIBC and Scotiabank all stop at $3,000 per transfer. At Vancity a $5,000 payment goes in one transfer instead of two, as long as it fits inside the $10,000 weekly window.

Vancity e-Transfer Fees

Sending is free on most current Vancity chequing accounts: Chequing Plus, Access Chequing, Essential Chequing, Essential Plus Chequing and Total Chequing. That comes from Vancity's personal service charge bulletin #184, effective March 8, 2026.

Two kinds of account pay per transfer:

Receiving is free on every account. One detail to know: Vancity charges the sending fee when you send, and does not refund it if you cancel the transfer or the recipient never accepts it.

Can You Increase Your Vancity e-Transfer Limit?

No. Vancity states that its e-Transfer limits are system limits and cannot be changed for individual members. A branch can't raise yours, however long you've banked there. That's a real difference from many smaller credit unions, where a branch can often adjust a member's caps.

If $10,000 a week is not enough, the options are:

  1. Spread the payment across the rolling windows. Anything over $10,000 means waiting for the 7-day window to clear, and anything over $20,000 means waiting for the 30-day window.
  2. Use a wire transfer. Vancity charges $20.00 for an outgoing wire to another Canadian institution, with no e-Transfer cap in the way.
  3. Pay by bill payment if the person you're paying is set up as a payee.
  4. Move business payments to a Vancity business account, which has far higher limits (below).

Vancity Interac e-Transfer Not Working

If a Vancity e-Transfer won't go through, the usual causes are:

If none of these explain it, call Vancity at 1-888-826-2489 (604-877-7000 in Metro Vancouver, 250-519-7000 in Greater Victoria).

How Long Does a Vancity e-Transfer Take?

Vancity says e-Transfers typically take 30 minutes or less when both sides have a good connection, and that large amounts can take longer. With Autodeposit, the money lands in the recipient's account without a security question.

A transfer the recipient doesn't accept expires 30 days after you send it. You can then cancel it to get the money back (the sending fee stays charged), and if you don't, it is returned to you automatically within seven days.

How to Cancel a Vancity e-Transfer

You can cancel a transfer only while it is still pending:

  1. Sign in to Vancity online banking or the mobile app.
  2. Find the pending Interac e-Transfer in your transfer history.
  3. Cancel it.

If the recipient has already accepted it, or has Autodeposit turned on, it can't be cancelled; the money is already in their account. Ask them to send it back. If someone is pressuring you to send money fast, stop and read about common e-Transfer scams first.

Vancity Business e-Transfer Limits

Vancity business accounts have much higher limits than personal ones:

The Independent Business account includes free Interac e-Transfers. If you're a sole proprietor taking client payments by e-Transfer, a business account also keeps that money separate from personal spending, which makes things easier once your revenue passes $30,000 in four consecutive calendar quarters and you have to register for GST/HST. Our GST/HST guide for small businesses covers when and how.

How Vancity Compares to Other Banks

Vancity's $6,000 per-transfer limit beats every Big Five bank and the typical credit union default of $3,000. Among the default personal limits we track, only ICICI Bank Canada's $10,000 per transfer is higher. Its $10,000 weekly cap, though, is tighter than ATB Financial's $35,000 and is the same as TD's. For the fee picture across every institution, see Interac e-Transfer fees in Canada.
