How email forwarding works
The core concept behind Biller: forward your Interac e-Transfer notification emails and we automatically track your income.
The concept
When someone sends you an Interac e-Transfer, your bank sends you a notification email. This email contains all the payment details: who sent it, how much, when, and a reference number.
Biller gives you a unique forwarding address (like jamie@income.biller.ca). When you forward these notification emails to your Biller address -- or set up auto-forwarding so it happens automatically -- Biller reads the email, extracts the payment details, and adds them to your income tracker.
That's it. No bank connections, no spreadsheets, no manual data entry. Just email forwarding.
What happens when you forward an email
Here's the step-by-step flow:
- You receive an e-Transfer notification from your bank (e.g. "You've received $200.00 from Sarah Johnson")
- The email arrives at your Biller address -- either manually forwarded or via auto-forward rule
- Biller verifies the email -- we check that it's actually from Interac (DKIM authentication) and that the forwarding address belongs to a real user
- Biller parses the payment details -- amount, sender name, date, and reference number are extracted
- The income appears on your dashboard -- instantly, with all details filled in
- You get a confirmation email -- Biller sends you a summary of what was recorded, including your year-to-date total
What we extract
From each Interac e-Transfer email, Biller extracts:
| Field | Example |
|---|---|
| Amount | $200.00 CAD |
| Sender name | Sarah Johnson |
| Date received | March 14, 2026 |
| Reference number | CA8rk7q0B3MN |
| Sender email | sarah.j@gmail.com (from Reply-To header) |
Supported email types
Biller currently supports Interac e-Transfer deposit notifications -- the email you get when money has been deposited into your account (either via auto-deposit or after you accept the transfer).
We do not currently process:
- e-Transfer send confirmations (outgoing payments)
- e-Transfer request money notifications
- Other bank notifications (balance alerts, statement notifications)
- Non-Interac payment notifications (PayPal, Stripe, etc.)
Any emails that aren't Interac e-Transfer notifications are safely ignored -- they won't create any income entries.
Security and privacy
We take the security of your financial data seriously:
- DKIM verification -- we verify that forwarded emails actually came from Interac, not a spoof
- Unique addresses -- your forwarding address is unique to you and can't be guessed
- No bank access -- we never connect to your bank or access your account. We only read forwarded emails.
- Delete anytime -- you can delete your account and all associated data at any time from Settings
Read our full Privacy Policy for more details.
