Card payments with Stripe
Connect a Stripe account and your invoices get a Pay by card button. Clients pay through Stripe's checkout, the money goes to your Stripe account, and Biller marks the invoice paid.
How it works
Biller uses Stripe Connect with a standard Stripe account that belongs to you. Card payments go straight to that account, and Biller never holds your money. You're the merchant on each charge, so payouts, refunds, and disputes are handled in your own Stripe dashboard.
Card payments are optional. Your invoices always show Interac e-Transfer instructions, with or without Stripe.
Connecting Stripe
- Go to Payments and click the settings (gear) icon at the top of the page. This opens Payment settings
- Under Card payments, click Connect with Stripe
- Stripe asks for your business details and the bank account to pay out to. The account is set up for Canada
- When you're done, Stripe sends you back to Biller
If Stripe has everything it needs, you'll see "Card payments are now enabled on your invoices." Payment settings then shows Card payments are on, along with your account status: Card payments, Payouts, Currency · country, your Payout account, and your Connected account ID. Use Manage on your Stripe dashboard to see payouts, transactions, and disputes.
If Stripe still needs more information, Payment settings shows Finish your Stripe setup. Click Continue Stripe setup to pick up where you left off.
Card payments are set up for each business separately. If you run more than one business in Biller, connect Stripe for each business that should take cards.
What clients see
On an unpaid invoice's public page, the How to pay box shows e-Transfer instructions first. Below them is "Prefer to pay by credit card?" and a Pay by card button.
Clicking Pay by card opens a Stripe Checkout page for the invoice total, in the invoice's currency. After paying, or cancelling, the client returns to the invoice page.
Once the invoice is paid, the How to pay box is replaced with "Paid on" and the payment date.
Fees
Two separate fees come out of each card payment made with Pay by card:
- Stripe's processing fee, charged by Stripe at the rates on your Stripe account.
- Biller's platform fee, a percentage of the payment: 2.5% on the Free plan, or 0.25% on Pro. The rate follows the owner's plan, so one Pro subscription lowers the fee for all of your businesses.
Interac e-Transfers and manual payments have no Biller fee. See Plans and billing for more about Pro.
How card payments are recorded
Pay by card payments. When the client completes checkout, Stripe notifies Biller. Biller records a payment with the source Card, applies it to that invoice, and marks the invoice paid once it's fully covered. Stripe pays the money out to your bank on your Stripe payout schedule.
Other charges on your Stripe account. Biller also records successful charges it didn't create, such as payment links or charges made in your Stripe dashboard. When you first connect, Biller also brings in earlier charges on the account, and a nightly sync catches anything that was missed. These payments go through the normal matching rules. They don't carry a client or a reference number, though, so they aren't applied to invoices automatically.
Card payments are recorded in the charge's currency. Charges in currencies Biller doesn't support (anything other than CAD, USD, EUR, or GBP) are skipped.
