Charging GST/HST on invoices
If you're registered for GST/HST, add your number and tax province once, and Biller shows the tax on your invoices. Here's how it works, including one limit you should know about.
Do you need to charge GST/HST?
Most small businesses don't have to register until their taxable sales pass $30,000, either in a single calendar quarter or over four calendar quarters in a row. Until you're registered, don't charge GST/HST.
Biller doesn't track your sales against this threshold for you. For the full rules, see our GST/HST guide for small businesses.
Setting up tax
- Go to Settings > Invoicing & tax
- Enter your GST/HST number (for example, 123456789RT0001)
- Choose your Tax province. Biller shows the rate it will use, such as HST 13% for Ontario. Choose Custom to enter your own Tax label and Tax rate.
- Click Update invoicing
These settings apply to invoices created from now on. Invoices you already have don't change.
Some provinces combine taxes into one rate. British Columbia, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan show as "GST + PST", and Quebec shows as "GST + QST". If you only collect GST there, choose Custom and enter the GST rate.
Invoices you create
On an invoice you create with New invoice, the Tax section decides how Biller treats the Amount:
- Leave the Tax section empty -- if you have a GST/HST number and a tax province, Biller assumes the Amount includes tax and splits it. For example, $113.00 in Ontario becomes $100.00 plus $13.00 HST.
- Fill in the Tax section -- Biller treats the Amount as the pre-tax price and uses the Tax amount you enter, adding it on top.
Invoices from completed work
Invoices Biller makes from completed jobs, prepaid packages, and seasonal contracts charge the GST/HST each service carries. The Amount on them is the pre-tax price, and the tax is added on top.
Each service has its own GST/HST rate and Tax label on the service form. A service you add starts at your business rate, so once your GST/HST number and tax province are saved there's nothing else to set up. Change a service's rate to charge something different, or set it to 0 for work that's exempt — the kind of mixed catalogue a tutor or a music teacher has.
When every taxed line on an invoice shares one rate, the invoice names that rate and label. If an invoice mixes rates, the tax total is still right, but no single rate is printed.
Where tax shows up
- On the invoice -- your client sees the Amount, a tax line with its label and rate, and the Total. Your GST/HST number appears under your business details.
- In Reports -- once invoices with tax are paid and matched to payments, the Tax Summary shows the tax collected and your pre-tax income. See Reports and exports.
