Setting up your business

From sign-up to your first scheduled job: pick your business type, connect your e-Transfer notifications, and add the services, clients, and jobs Biller runs on.

Create your account

Sign up with your Email address and a password (at least 8 characters), then click Create Account. You can also use Sign up with Apple.

You're signed in straight away. Biller sends you a welcome email and an email with a link to verify your address.

Every account starts on the Free plan, which includes the whole Request, Schedule, Complete, Invoice, Get paid loop, with no limit on invoices. There's no trial to run out. See Plans and billing for what Pro adds.

Pick your business type

The first setup screen asks What kind of business do you run? Your answer sets the wording Biller uses (for example, "Pet Parents" and "Walks" instead of "Clients" and "Jobs"), the extra fields on your client records, and a starter list of services.

Business type Starter services
General service business None. You add your own.
Dog walking & pet sitting 30- and 60-minute walks, puppy drop-in visits, overnight pet sitting, plus a 10-walk prepaid pack
Tutoring & lessons 1-hour and 30-minute sessions, exam prep, group sessions, plus a 10-lesson prepaid pack
House cleaning Standard, deep, move-out, and office cleans
Lawn care & snow removal Driveway plowing, salting, lawn mowing, spring yard cleanup, hedge trimming

Choose one and click Continue. If none fit, click Continue as a general service business.

The starter services come with suggested prices. They're only a starting point, so edit, remove, or add to them whenever you like. See Your services.

The business type stays with the business
You can't switch an existing business to a different type later. If you also run a different kind of business, add it as a second business under the same login from Settings > Business using Add another business. See Running more than one business.

Set up e-Transfer forwarding

The next three screens get Interac e-Transfer payments flowing into Biller. You can skip any of them and come back later.

  1. Here's your forwarding address. This shows your unique @income.biller.ca address with a Copy Address button. Biller also sets Your timezone from your browser here, and you can change it. Click Next: Set Up Forwarding, or I'll do this later.
  2. Set up auto-forwarding. Choose your email provider (Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo, Proton Mail, Fastmail, or iCloud) to get step-by-step instructions for forwarding Interac notifications to your address. Click Done -- Let's Test It, or Skip for now.
  3. Send a test. Forward an Interac e-Transfer notification you've already received to your Biller address, then click Skip -- go to dashboard to see it on your Payments page.

For more detail on each step, see Set up auto-forwarding and Send a test email.

The Get set up checklist

Your Home page shows a Get set up checklist. Each item ticks itself off when you've actually done it:

  1. Add a service you offer: what you charge for. If you picked a business type with starter services, this one is already done.
  2. Add your first client: who you work for. See Adding clients manually.
  3. Schedule your first job: put work on the calendar. See Scheduling and completing jobs.
  4. Get ready to get paid: your e-Transfer address is ready.

Once a job is done, invoice it and record the payment. See Invoicing completed work. To let clients ask for work themselves, share your booking page. See Your booking page.

Add your business details

Your business starts out named after you (or the first part of your email address). Before you send your first invoice:

  • Go to Settings > Business to set the Business name clients see on your booking page and invoices
  • Go to Settings > Invoicing & tax to add your address, phone, GST/HST number (if you're registered), and Tax province

See Business profile for every field and where it shows up.
